SUMMARY:Late Night Jazz: Cathy Herndon
DESCRIPTION:Cathy (Otterson) Herndon has the unique ability to please audiences anywhere with her crystal-clear voice and refined touch at the piano. Cathy grew up in Strum\, Wisconsin where she learned to play several instruments as a child. During high school she was a member of the acclaimed musical group\, THE KIDS FROM WISCONSIN. After earning her degree in music on saxophone and clarinet at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire\, she spent several years as a professional woodwind player. While working as a saxophonist on a cruise ship\, she began singing in public for the first time. The sure phrasing and improvisational skills developed during her saxophone years can be heard in her singing today. Since beginning her solo career\, Cathy has been an innovator. Her tasteful addition of the synthesizer to the traditional solo piano sound must be heard to be believed. Countless times listeners in the next room have assumed they are hearing an elegant trio. They are always amazed when they find that it’s one person making so much beautiful music. After moving to the New York area in 1989\, Cathy became a prolific songwriter. Throughout her career\, many of Cathy’s fans request her original songs that are beautifully performed on her CD called\, FOR YOU MY LOVE\, nearly as often as the other great music she performs. Cathy’s talents have taken her to several corners of the world. For nearly two decades\, Cathy performed at the Rihga Royal Hotel and the Ritz Carlton-Battery Park in New York City. These experiences\, along with thousands of hours at the piano singing to discriminating audiences\, have molded her into a world class artist. Whether performing jazz\, Gershwin\, Porter\, Broadway favorites\, or the finest music of today\, Cathy has a graceful way of touching her audience\, leaving them with the feeling they’ve made a new friend.

DESCRIPTION:About Jason and The Jazzerknots: \nJason and the Jazzerknots formed to play original jazz compositions that appeal to listeners of all stripes. Led by guitarist and composer Jason Goessl\, and featuring Josh Gallagher on piano\, Jeremy Boettcher on upright bass\, and Mike Malone on drums\, the group sounds as if they are just getting started—as if you’ve wandered into a jazz performance in the middle of the first set. Their sound is grounded in the great tradition of jazz rhythm sections\, from the Big Band Era to the present\, and topped with Jason Goessl’s unique\, horn-like approach to the guitar. Their debut album “The Shakedown” showcases the range of the Jazzerknots appeal and skill\, featuring all original compositions by Jason Goessl that range from the pensive and evocative to the joyous and swinging. \nAbout Jason Goessl: \nA subtle aesthetic sensitivity and a veritable encyclopedic knowledge of the guitar have made Jason Goessl one of the most exciting musicians of recent vintage. His studies began on guitar in the small town of Maribel\, Wisconsin\, and grew during his college years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire\, where he honed his jazz skills. After wrapping up his studies\, he moved to Seattle\, where he recorded and produced for a variety of styles\, including indie rock and folk music\, becoming a regular fixture of the local music scene. Now calling Oshkosh\, Wisconsin home\, Mr. Goessl divides his time between his record company\, Sun Goose Records\, his jazz duo featuring his wife\, Kate Voss\, on vocals\, Sundae + Mr. Goessl\, and various other musical projects that catch his attention. His most recent jazz recording as a leader serves as a retrospective\, featuring compositions he created over the past 10 years\, and serves as a love letter to the jazz guitar. Mr. Goessl’s unique style\, which features striking patterns of articulation and technique\, was developed not only through a thorough study of jazz guitar masters but by studying the tonguing patterns of clarinet and saxophone players as well.

DESCRIPTION:Returning to The Lakely Patio is everyone’s favorite patio performance\, dubbed Fireside Tunes\, is meant to capture the essence of some of our most-loved experiences – spending the evening outside on The Patio with folks we care about\, listening to live music in a down-to-earth\, low-key (but high-vibe) atmosphere\, sipping craft drinks\, and sharing a love of music – all around our stone-cut fire pits. \nCome and enjoy an inspiring performance of original music with Songa. Singer/Songwriters and lifelong musicians Mario and Sherry Friedel will take you on a journey with their unique instrumental sound and soothing vocal blend. Their newest EP\, released in 2022\, Sunshine in the Rain\, includes songs of hope and resilience with a message of love. Their 2020 Nashville produced album\, Dreams Are in the Making\, shows Songa’s true Americana artistry\, with authentic songs in the folk\, blues and country genres\, mixed in with folk-grass and Latin jazz for variety. \nMulti-instrumentalists playing guitar\, banjo\, ukulele\, harmonica\, melodica and percussion\, these artists will take you from folk to country\, bluegrass to blues to Latin jazz and back again. Rooted in the Nashville songwriting tradition\, you won’t want to miss their honest lyrics and pure vocal harmonies. Songa was a finalist in the 2020 and 2022 Great River Folk Festival Songwriting Contests and voted the “fan favorite” in 2020. A 2021 compilation of 7 of Mario’s songs arranged by Tom Washatka (Steel Moon Records) for Big Band Jazz in Janet Planet’s “Under the Venus Moon” was recognized on the Grammy Ballot 2021 under the category Best Vocal Jazz Album. \nMario\, originally from Fond du Lac\, was produced and published by Buzz Cason\, Creative Workshop Studio\, Nashville\, TN and signed to Universal Records in 1971 as a member of White Duck\, Jimmy Buffet’s first Coral Reefer Band\, alongside legendary Americana artist John Hiatt. Sherry is a lifelong music educator and church music director.  \nAt Fireside Tunes\, you can expect an emotive musical experience of local\, regional\, and occasionally touring artists with a strong lean towards acoustic\, folk\, and Americana styles. Fireside Tunes offers listeners a well-rounded sound\, with occasional notes of indie\, rock\, and other musical genres. \nFireside Tunes is held on select Wednesdays throughout the summer and autumn on The Lakely Patio from 7:30pm to 10:00pm.
