Wandering Spirits: The World of Rum

Thursday, July 11, 2019

Rum may be one of the most misunderstood and mysterious spirits. Join us for our next edition of Wandering Spirits with an exploration of The World of Rum. While rum, for many, may be most associated with a rough night in college, a closer look will prove that rum is equally as diverse and refined as any scotch or bourbon.

This will be the first Wandering Spirits led by our new bar manager, Miles Davenport. With his vast knowledge of rum and Tiki culture, come set sail, sit back, and enjoy a wonderful evening of exotic flavors from around the world! The adventure will take us on a deep dive of the history, cultural impact, classifications, and the unique tastes that rum offers. We will be sampling over 10 different styles of rum as well as learning the proper way to make the most iconic Tiki drink: The Mai Tai.

It’s the perfect time of year to get your rum on so get your tickets fast as there is very limited availability!

Class begins at 6:00 p.m.
$20 / person advanced online // $25 / person at the door, if seats are available

Wandering Spirits: Agave Spirits

Tuesday, December 11, 2018

Join us for an incredibly special episode of Wandering Spirits as we take a deep dive into the world of the world’s tastiest monocot…agave. Agave, a native to the American tropics, is widely cultivated and used in the production of a wide variety of spirits, almost exclusively produced in Mexico, most of which can be classified in the mezcal family. Most famous of these spirits is, of course, tequila; however, there are many other forms of mezcal, based upon the utilization of other, lesser-known varietals of agave.

Laura Green, a Chicago-based Spirits Specialist with the Winebow Group, will be on hand to lead us through an impressively diverse range of agave spirits; from the various ages and production methods of tequila to a wide array of mezcals. Laura has traveled extensively through the various regions of Mexico where agave spirits are produced and has a personal relationship with many of the growers and producers.

If you have even the slightest notion of the amount of freak-out level response that this family of Mexican spirits has upon Chef Nathan Berg and The Lakely’s amazing bar staff, then you’ll know that calling us “excited” for this event is the very definition of understatement. This is a one-of-a-kind event and will likely sell out based upon our staff’s sheer enthusiasm alone, so be sure to grab you tickets right away, as space is limited.

The class begins at 6pm and lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

Wandering Spirits: An Old Fashioned Evening

Tuesday, December 11, 2018

The Lakely staff will once again be leading a Wandering Spirits Cocktail Class focusing on what else, the Old Fashioned. What better time to give folks a chance to dive deep into the world of Old Fashioneds than right in the heart of our two-week-long Supper Club Celebration? Considering that supper clubs were in large part responsible for The Old Fashioned becoming Wisconsin’s de facto state (alcoholic) beverage, it seems like the perfect time to learn about the history of this storied cocktail classic, as well as being guided on an instructional tour of many of its various forms. Participants need only show up thirsty for both knowledge and classic drinks.

Class begins at 6:00pm and lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

Wandering Spirits: Tattersall Distilling

Tuesday, December 11, 2018

Join us for an evening in celebration of Tattersall Distillery from Minneapolis. Founded in 2015, Tattersall has already left an incredible mark on the craft distilling world of the Upper Midwest. They make incredible spirits like variations on gin, rye whiskey, rum and aquavit; many of which are created with local and/or foraged ingredients to give a definitive sense-of-place stamp to their spirits. However, Tattersall takes things a bit further and goes where many of the Midwestern distilleries do not, creating a vast array of specialty liqueurs and “modifiers”, spirits with less of a broad appeal but absolutely essential to many of the most popular cocktails in the world.
For this Wandering Spirits, we will welcome Patrick Orlopp from Tattersall as he gives us a little from-a-distance tour of the distillery as well as an introduction to who they are and what motivates them to do what they do. He will also lead participants on a tasting through some of the spirits in their impressive portfolio. As an added bonus, he hopes to have a sample or two from a recent collaboration the distillery did with both the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis Institute of Art to recreate vintage spirits found in the massive collection of medical books and journals of the Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine. The one-of-a-kind project, which helped to bring back to life unusual medieval spirits such as “Milk Punch” and “Plague Water”, was recently featured in the New York Times.
The class begins at 6pm and lasts approximately 1.5 hours, followed by the chance to try a smattering of specialty cocktails developed by The Lakely bar staff featuring Tattersall offerings.
