Lakely Loves: Heirloom Tomatoes

Friday, August 3, 2018

It’s always a special time of year when heirloom tomatoes start to ripen on the vine. These incredible gems are only available for about 2 months out of the year and it’s one of Chef Nathan Berg’s favorite times of the year. He will be creating a special 6-course dinner and thoughout the dinner, he will be sharing much of his experience working with – and growing – these edible wonders, including featuring many that he grows in his own garden.

Heirloom tomatoes come in an unbelievable array of shapes, colors and sizes and the stories of their history – along with eclectic mix of folks responsible for their survival – are nearly as rich as their ethereal flavors. Come experience tomatoes in a way that you never thought possible!

Dinner starts at 6:00pm. You can make reservations through the Oxbow front desk by calling 715.839.0601. Don’t sleep on this, as this dinner is already more than half-filled with attendees from our last Lakely Loves. Sorry, but we cannot accommodate significant dietary restrictions for these events.

Lakely Loves: Maize

Friday, August 3, 2018

In recent years, corn has gotten a bit of a bad rep in the nutritional world, mostly due to the numerous ways that its over-processed forms have invaded the American diet. However, corn is an incredible vegetable native to North America, with thousands of varieties and formats available to the culinary world. From sweet corn to tortillas to polenta to cornbread, there are so many ways to utilize “maize” that we often overlook its prevalence in our diets. Join us as Chef Nathan Berg and his Lakely team present a six-course feast featuring this amazing and versatile food in a number of unique and delicious ways.

LAKELY LOVES… Hmong Cuisine

Thursday, June 21, 2018

Join us as Chef Nathan Berg gets out of the driver’s seat and hands the wheel over to Lakely cook Tony Moua. Tony will be preparing a six-course dinner that will feature a number of traditional Hmong dishes, some just slightly tweaked to accommodate the ingredients available here in western Wisconsin. The impetus for this dinner was a dish Tony created for our anniversary dinner last October, in which he made a traditional larb salad, but replaced the toasted rice with our local wild rice and replaced the standard ocean fish with whitefish from these parts. That dish was so incredible that we (well, Jorja) thought it was worthy of exploring this concept as a full-fledged Lakely Loves… We all expect to learn a lot about Hmong food traditions, while also discovering ways in which we can put a local twist on these foods to create dishes that can honor both Hmong heritage AND our local foodshed. And what better time than June, when local greens and vegetables are popping out of the ground in full force? The bar will also be whipping up a few speciality cocktails/beverages for the evening that will focus heavily on the flavors featured in Hmong cuisine. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind (first of its kind?) dining experience that we’re incredibly excited to offer! We’re already about 75% booked so if you want to get in, you’d better hurry and call  for your reservations soon!
